Today’s Tasty Tuesday will work great for both camping and for summer BBQs. We had Jorge’s work over a few weeks ago for the 4th and made some traditional BBQ food. Cheeseburgers and hot dogs on the grill, potatoes, mac & cheese, deviled eggs and baked beans. While cheeseburgers don’t really take a lot to make, you can always season them to meet your taste levels. We love adding burger seasoning to ours, but the seasoning blends are endless. More importantly is having the staples to build your burger. For us, those staples include lettuce, tomatoes, onion, jalapenos, cheese and the condiments. Instead of giving you a recipe for burgers this week, we are giving you some inspiration to plan ahead and prep for some great burgers, no matter where you are!
Wondering how to make your BBQ prep easier, or easing the work for a camping trip? Plan ahead and prep!
For BBQ’s:
2 days prior we always pull from the freezer. For events we tend to purchase meat in bulk from a local butcher and freeze in portions a few weeks before the event. That way we know we have plenty and save by going through a local butcher and buying in bulk. We freeze in portions so that we have leftovers in manageable portions to use ourselves in the future. The day before I like to write down my menu and take stock of what is in the fridge and what I forgot. I’d rather run to the store the day before than the day of an event, so I check out to make sure it is all there. The day of the event I prep most everything in the morning so I can relax and enjoy the company as they come. For the burgers and hot dogs I place the condiments in a display tub that is easily hauled from the fridge, to the back deck and back again; the veggies (lettuce, tomatoes, onions and jalapenos) are sliced, diced and put on/in serving dishes and bowls and covered until it is time to serve; finally, buns are placed near the door so that they are ready to go to. A little prep makes the day go smoothly and taste great!
For Camping:
We usually leave first thing in the morning for camping trips, so the night before is when everything gets prepped and packed. We are very thankful to have a camper with a fridge, but this can still be done if you are tent camping and have everything kept in coolers. I simply prep the veggies just like a BBQ, but instead of serving dishes the veggies are placed in Tupperware containers. When we are camping, Jorge is in charge of cooking, but I make sure the ingredients are prepped as much as I can! Remember to pack buns and condiments and you have an easy and delicious dinner!
