Handmade Valentine’s Day Cards

Valentine’s Day cards are a traditional way to express love and affection to your significant other, friend or family members. It is a thoughtful gesture to show you care about them. When you make your cards by hand, it shows a little extra attention. The thought definitely counts when you purchase cards and send them, but a handmade card is sure to please anyone who receives it.

Handmade cards are thoughtful, personal and can be made from virtually anything, along with a sheet of paper. This easy project can be done by anyone, of any age, and is super inexpensive. You can use things found around the house, or go big and hit up the craft store for high end supplies. I prefer not spending a lot of money. In my mind, it is more about the time and effort spent on the card, and not how much you spent on it. That being said I do make “crafts” for a living and have a large amount of supplies on hand, so I may not be the one to give advice on the supplies.

That being said, here are some supplies to gather to make your card:

  • Card stock, construction paper or blank printer paper
  • Markers, colored pencils, pens & pencils or crayons
  • Glue, tape and scissors
  • Optional Additions: glitter, ribbons, stickers, stamps, stencils and more!

These are just some of the supplies and ideas of things to use when making your own card. Get creative and think outside the box to make your cards even more special! Make sure to add a heartfelt message, or short poem, to express your love for the recipient of your handmade card!

Want to take your cards up a level? Turn your cards into pop-up cards, paint the cover of your card and then add your decorations over the painted background. There are quilling techniques, where you curl up strips of paper and use them to form designs. Flowers and hearts would work great with this technique. Use rubber stamps to stamp designs and messages, or even glue personal photos down on your cards to create a very personal flair!

No matter which design feature you are aiming for, make sure to include a personalization to your card. Add a hand-written message or poem to your card. Use the recipient’s favorite colors or photos or themes. You can always include a special memory that you shared or an inside joke that only you two would understand. These little things go a long way in making a handmade card even more special!

No matter how intricate and detailed you do, or don’t, go with your card make sure to have fun with it. The sentimental value of these handmade cards are far more important than if it looks like it came from a high end stationary store or not. Sometimes the messiest gifts are the best!
