Clary Sage (Salvia Sclarea) Medicinal Herb Plant.

What is it?

Clary sage is a short-living herb plant. It originally comes from areas in the northern Mediterranean basin. This plant has a very long history of being grown as an herb, but it is also widely grown for it’s production of an essential oil. The flowers of this plant can be mauve, lilac, white or pink. It smells like an herb and is earthy, floral and a bit fruity. One question I get a lot is: “Is Clary sage the same as the sage in my kitchen?” It is not! The sage used as a seasoning is robust and savory, while the Clary sage is softer and sweeter.

Uses for:

While it was once used frequently to make wine and beer, it is most often used now as an essential oil. It is used in perfumes, bath products and aromatherapy and as a flavoring in liquors, wines and vermouth. Clary sage can also be used for upset stomach and other digestive problems.
