What are they?
Limes come from a citrus fruit tree that grows in tropical (or subtropical) locations. The tree grows with evergreen leaves and flower with white petals before showing the lime fruit. The fruit had a thin green exterior that guards a acidic tasting interior. Fun fact: there are sweet limes that grow in parts of Egypt.
The limes that you think of when you think limes are actually Persian limes. They are about two inches in diameter and give us that sour, acidic taste we have grown to love from limes.
Uses for Limes:
Limes have an endless amount of uses. They are used in everything from cooking and cleaning to cleaning and aromatherapy. Limes are full of healthy properties and the smell (if you like citrus) and delightful. While I don’t enjoy eating citrus, I do love the smell and use lime in my own home often.
Here are some great way to use the lime fruit:
Zest it: The zest of the lime is a great use for the rind. Lime zest is a delicious ingredient in cooking & baking. The zest also makes for a pop of flavor in drinks like cocktail recipes and brewing tea. I enjoy adding it to my water when I am infusing my daily water intake.
Juice it: The juice of a lime is used throughout the home. It is called for in many recipes again, like the zest. We always have limes in our fruit crisper of our refrigerator and juice on the door. It is that essential in our home. Not to mention it is nice to add a slice of fresh lime to a bottle of Corona on a hot day.
Helpful note: When you are getting ready to juice a lime, let it set out to warm up a bit and then roll on the counter before cutting open. It will loosen the interior and help you to get more juice out of your lime. We also use a citrus reamer to get the most out of the fruit.
Benefits of Using the Essential Oils:
Limes are full of antioxidants and vitamin C. Vitamin C works wonders to help reverse the effects of sun damage to skin, improves elasticity, minimizes wrinkles and helps skin look more radiant. Packs a pretty amazing punch right?! Antioxidants are great for you because they help to prevent damage to your cells from outside sources that can’t be controlled.
Lime essential oil can help to heal wounds and infections when applied to the skin. It is also used in oral health to strengthen gums and aid in keep bacteria out. Do you have a cold or the flu? Inhaling a steam of lime is a great way to work out respitory problems and help you to breathe easier. The essential oil also helps to alleviate anxiety and lower stress levels. I enjoy adding citrus to my morning showers to get me started off on the right foot.
