Peppermint essential oil comes from the flowering parts and the leaves of a peppermint plant. The peppermint plant grows throughout Europe and North America. We often grow this plant in our own gardens and use the leaves in cooking, baking and in some of our bath products. It is a highly invasive plant. It can quickly take over an entire garden bed and while it smells amazing, I recommend planting this one in a pot or far away from other plants.
Benefits of using peppermint essential oil include aiding in digestion and boosting energy. Peppermint also helps fight sinus infections, helps with symptoms of IBS and other digestive ailments, can help ease headaches and is great for easing muscle aches and joint paint. It also has been shown to improve mental functions and help to reduce stress levels. Wow, is that a lot of benefits or what?!
Uses for peppermint are vast, but here are a few ways that we use them here at Tin Box: Topically; orally, through aromatherapy, and ingested. We use peppermint essential oil topically, meaning that we apply it to our skin in different ways. One way is through our scrubs. Our foot scrubs have a peppermint infused coconut oil base that helps to increase circulation. One of our sugar scrubs has peppermint essential oils that we love to use in the morning to help us wake up and focus. I have ingested peppermint leaves on their own to help ease an upset stomach, but have also used just a drop of peppermint oil under my tongue. Aromatherapy is a big way we use peppermint essential throughout our home. The diffuser in my office helps release the scent and promotes focus and energy, while the bath bombs in my bath help to relieve stress. We also like to add the leaves to cocktails and recipes to enjoy in the kitchen! There are many ways to enjoy and use peppermint, both the leaves and essential oils of the plant, which way will you choose to enjoy this one?
We use the plant and the essential oil in our uses here at Tin Box, but if you want to add it to your own home we suggest growing it in containers or using the essential oil. We hope you enjoyed this article about peppermint. There are so many great ways to use both the essential oil and the plant itself! If you decide to use the essential oil, please do your own research before ingesting or applying to your skin. It does not have the same effect for everyone. While I am an avid user, I am not a health professional. Please reach out if you have any questions!
