The Bloody Mary is my go-to drink when we are out for breakfast. It is a little spicy, a lot savory and perfect for brunch. If you are lucky, the Bloody Mary is more than just a cocktail, it can be an experience. Keep reading to try making this popular morning cocktail at home.

What is a Bloody Mary? It is a cocktail that started in France when a bartender mixed vodka with tomato juice, along with spices and seasonings. It is said that it was called “Buckets of Blood” before being renamed for the urban legend of Bloody Mary. This drink is commonly enjoyed during brunch, as a hangover drink or on holidays. The deep red color makes it a great drink to enjoy during Halloween season too!

Let’s gather the ingredients and make our own! You will need vodka, tomato juice, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce (if you are into that), horseradish, celery salt, and black pepper. In a tall glass, combine the the vodka, tomato juice, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, horseradish, celery salt and pepper and stir well. Fill the remainder of the glass with ice and stir again. I do not garnish when we make these at home, but I do appreciate the garnishes when we are out for breakfast or brunch! My favorite is when there is seafood on the rim like shrimp and crab, but I also love seeing hamburger sliders, hot dogs or even mozzarella sticks! I love seeing Bloody Mary menus all over the country and often try them to see how they assemble these amazing garnish designs.

Want to add your own spin to this recipe? Swap out the vodka and replace it with tequila for a Bloody Maria. Use beer instead of vodka for a lighter version of a Michelada. Add bacon, shrimp and cheese cubes for a simple, but perfect garnish! Having people over? Make a pitcher ahead of time to serve to the masses and set up a garnish bar so that they can decorate their own rims with what they like!
We hope this inspires you to try this breakfast cocktail at home. If you try, let us know how it turned out for you in the comments! As always, thank you for reading and joining us on this journey. We love learning and growing with you. Simply, Beth
