Back-to-School Pencil Treat Bags – A Sweet Start to the School Year!

I can’t believe back to school time is already here. While I don’t feel the same excitement as I did when I was teaching, I still love the anticipation that is in the air all around! Students are either dreading or looking forward to being back with their friends all day, and parents are either dreading or looking forward to their kids being out of the house again. No matter what your outlook is on this time of year, this thoughtful treat is easy to make and will make a special surprise for your kiddos (and you) on the first day of school!

This treat bag is very easy to put together. As always, let’s gather our supplies. We will need clear treat bags or a piping bag (if you don’t want to purchase these, a gallon sized baggie will work, just cut the seal off), ribbon or a twist tie, and if you’d like to add a gift tag you will need those supplies as well. For the inside of the bag you will need mini chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, goldfish, Hershey kisses and pink starburst candies. Our goal is to make it look like a pencil, so these items will work great for that! (note: the piping bags are the best bet for this. I tried different types of bags and the size, shape and rigid nature of the plastic piping bag made for an easy fill and didn’t waste space with the goldfish and other ingredients.)

We are going to layer the bag to make it look like a pencil, so let’s start with mini chocolate chips for the pencil tip, then add mini marshmallows for the shaved wood. Goldfish crackers will be the body of the pencil and take up the most room. The metal on the pencil will be filled in with Hershey kisses in silver foil and topped off with pink Starburst candies for the eraser! Cute, right?! Once everything is filled into your bag tie off with ribbon or a twist tie.

Want to add a gift tag? You can simply cut your own with construction paper or card stock and glue to the bag, or punch a hole and tie into the ribbon. I would something like “Have a sharp year!” on the tag to stay on theme. You can find a printable gift tag in our Tin Box Creates shop on our website too, just click here!

This pencil treat is great for students for the first day of school, or you can save this idea for teacher appreciation! I love this idea for a class treat if you want to get a little extra creative when snack day is your turn too. It is thoughtful and tasty and perfect for so many different age groups. We hope this brings a little extra fun to your kid’s first day of school! As always, thank you for reading and joining us on this journey. We love learning and growing with you. Simply, Beth
