Let’s Go Hiking!

If you have been watching my personal page lately, you will see that Jorge, Gracen and myself have really been enjoying hikes around the island. It is a great way to get outside, get a workout and enjoy the beauty of the island. You can find the same amazing views in your area, it just takes a little research and the boost to get started! While the early mornings aren’t my favorite (we go before it gets too hot), I’m always happy when we get to the top!

Wondering how to get started? I always suggest starting with easy because having to call for help or getting stuck somewhere is no fun for anyone. Start small and easy so that you can work your way up to harder hikes and build on what you are capable of. I promise that even if your hike is all flat with no steep inclines, being outside and connecting with nature is worth putting on your shoes and getting out there!

There are so many benefits to hiking that it is silly to think you wouldn’t get anything from it. Not only is it great for your physical health, it is great for your mental health as well. Hiking can help to reduce stress and boost your mood through the exercise, the views and the fresh air. There is no added stress, because you need very little to get started. (See my simple list of supplies to get started below) Want a fun activity with friends, or family, that doesn’t cost a dime? Hiking is a great activity for all experience levels so it is great for a group!

Okay, so are you wondering what to bring? Socks and shoes are definitely the number one thing to think about. I wear low cut hiking shoes, while my husband wears high-top hiking boots. The low tops are great for easier hikes, but still give you the grip and sturdiness needed for inclines, rocks and other obstacles along the way. The high-tops are better all around because they protect your ankles. I will be purchasing these when we move up to the next level of hikes, but for now I choose more comfortable shoes for improving my skill level. Some people even use hiking sandals for waterfall hikes. These are great to keep on while walking through wet areas. I prefer sturdier socks though and enjoy a slightly thicker hiking sock. Taking care of your feet and being comfortable are the most important thing to think about when going for a hike.

Now on to some of the other items to think about bringing with you. Think about what you are going to wear. Light layers are good and necessary, depending on where you live. Here in Hawaii we wear either athletic shorts or long pants that are comfortable to move in, but will protect us from the elements. We tend to wear hats and sunglasses along with a light shirt. If we were in a location that wasn’t quite so warm, we would also include a light rain jacket and long sleeve shirt as well. Remember to bring you phone with you. Not only is the phone great for GPS and communication, but it also handy for taking photos of all the amazing things you will see along the way! Water is a great thing to have on hand, especially during the hotter days and snacks come in handy for a longer hikes. Sunscreen and bug spray are never a bad thing to have on hand. We usually put these things on before starting our hike, but sometimes wish we brought the bug spray along for extra protection. If you are prone to accidents, a small first aid kit is smart to bring along too. A small backpack is a great thing to keep with you to pack these items and any others you may want to bring along. Jorge brings a backpack that fits Gracie in, our snacks and a camel pack for water. It is super convenient for our hikes that last about 2 hours in hot weather and varying conditions.

Next, it is time to find your first trail! Like I said earlier, it is best to start with a beginner-friendly trail if you are new to hiking. You can use apps, like AllTrails, or search online for easy, beginner-friendly hikes near you. State parks and national forests usually have well-marked trails that are maintained and easy to navigate. Make sure to read about the trail and see if you find hikes that avoid steep elevation. The inclines are what will break you and if you are a new hiker, may not be the best first impression.

Safety First! When you have your first hike picked out and are all prepared to go, please remember to be safe out there. Try to get a friend, or family member, to head out with you. If you must go alone, please tell someone you trust your plan and when they can expect to hear from you. Stay on the trail during your hikes and pace yourself. If you need to take a break, take as many as you need. Common sense goes a long way when you are out enjoying nature. Make sure to leave the environment cleaner than how you found it. If you see trash, pick it up and bring it with you to dispose of it. Safety means for you and for the nature around you.

Okay, well I hope this helped to inspire you to get outside soon and go for a hike! We have absolutely been loving our weekend hikes and hope to see photos and comments of your own. Remember to wear the right shoes, bring water with you and start with something easy. Come back and share your adventure with us in the comments! As always, thank you for reading along and joining us on this journey. We love learning and growing with you all. Simply, Beth
